Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens

We love going to zoos now and then, since we love animals and zoos house various exotic animals, reptiles, and avians. We have been meaning to go back to the LA Zoo, and we finally made it closer to the end of the year, haha.

The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Garden is a 133-acre zoo located at 5333 Zoo Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027. Owned by the city of Los Angeles, this LA Landmark is home to more than 270 species.

Welcome to the LA Zoo!

This is the park's map. The zoo is quite large, so be prepared to spend good 2-3 hours, longer if you plan on dining here or bringing kids. LA Zoo is extremely family-friendly. The entire park has wide paths to accommodate large groups and strollers, and the slope isn't too bad. In fact, we saw so many strollers there! If you're a parent looking for fun, kid-friendly places to go, LA Zoo is it!

We are always tempted to go into the gift shop and buy some overpriced souvenirs!

This menagerie of animals is a collection of animal light lanterns.

If you visit the zoo now, you can see beautifully lit animal lanterns at night.

LA Zoo does a holiday light event from November 17th, 2023 to January 7th, 2024 (6 pm-10 pm), and the animal lanterns can be found throughout the park.

During the light festival, LA Zoo has nightly tickets available for purchase.

We didn't see the lights because we learned about this event after we arrived at the Zoo, and we weren't planning on staying until sunset. But it must've been a marvelous and festive event!

There are so many cool animals at the LA Zoo, and we love how open the enclosures are.

The animals didn't look cramped or unhappy, and they were very responsive and active!

Would you look at this cutie?

Most enclosures didn't have wire nets, and it was much easier to see and appreciate the animals. We've been to several zoos with heavy netting, and honestly, it ruined the experience.

This giraffe was so goofy!

The Zoo has several restaurants, in case you get hungry. Most of the restaurants sell light salads, wraps, sandwiches, burgers and refreshments.

The zoo gets very busy in Summer, so if you want to beat the crowd, we suggest going in October/November.

The LA Zoo is a great outing spot with family or friends, and we'll be returning next year.

Until next time!
