We enjoy Korean cuisine and love using ceramic dinnerware for table setting. It brings out and highlights the dishes and magically makes the food more delectable and enticing.
Our go-to dinnerware for Korean dishes is from Hwasoban, a hand-crafted ceramic manufacturer based in Bundang, South Korea.
Established in 2010, the brand has several branches in Korea and Los Angeles, USA.
We visited the store in LA - it is located inside the California Market at 450 S Western Ave., Suite 209, Los Angeles, CA 90020.
The store has the most beautiful assortment of dinnerware; each piece looks practical and useful. There are usually a lot of side dishes when you're serving Korean food, and Hwasoban has different shapes and sizes of dishes and bowls for serving various Korean side dishes.
Hwasoban uses a special blend of clays sourced in California, and its dishes display neutral, earth-tones that complement Korean dishes.
Because each Hwasoban piece is handcrafted, you can expect slight variations between the pieces.
We've been collecting Hwasoban wares for some time now.
These broth bowls are perfect for Korean soups.
Although it is intended for serving soups, its utilitarian size makes it a great everyday bowl. We also use it for serving cereals, grapes, and yogurt parfaits.
Or you could use it for matcha!
These edged rice bowls are, you guessed it, for serving rice. They are smaller than the broth bowls, and we find them to be an ideal size for rice. We own 4 colors out of 5. Hwasoban dishes usually come in 5 colors - ivory, black, wine, dark gray, and light gray.
These hat bowls and lid plates are relatively new additions to our collection.
The hat bowl and lid plate need to be purchased separately, but they fit like gloves!
The lid plate can be used as a lid on top of the hat bowl or as a plate for serving smaller dishes.
Such a fitting name for a plate that pulls double duty.
The Mask Bowl is one of the most utilitarian and frequently-used dinnerware. Its organic oval shape makes any dish look bountiful, and the size is great for sharing.
You can find the Hwasoban mark on the back of the dish.
We made Japchae, a popular Korean dish made of glass noodles, an assortment of vegetables and protein of your choice.
And lastly, meet our brand-new addition!
Hwasoban's ON cookware is a ceramic pot that retains heat excessively well, making it an ideal choice for serving Korean soups.
The ON pot can be used directly on a heat source, unlike Hwasoban's other ceramic dishes. It is also oven-safe. When we saw this glossy black pot in person, we were eagerly planning all the amazing dishes we could make.
The first dish we made was Eomuk-guk (fish cake soup).
It's always been our comfort food ever since we were little.
Yummy!
We highly recommend Hwasoban dishes for serving Asian cuisine - the sizes, shapes and finishes of the Hwasoban dishes are designed for various Asian dishes (not just Korean, might we add!).
Although they are quite pricey and caring for them is not the easiest (hand wash only), we highly recommend them if you're looking for neat and proper dinnerware to present Asian dishes.
And they can be used for non-Asian dishes, just as well.
A lasagna made from scratch -
Or fresh cut white nectarines, these ceramic dishes are beautiful and artisanal.
Until next time!
