I used to think spending more than like $15–20 on a plain tee was ridiculous until I bought a properly made one. The difference was immediate. Thicker fabric, better fit, collar didn’t get all stretched out after washing, and it just sat nicer on the body.
Cheap basics always seem fine at first, but then they start doing annoying stuff — shrinking weirdly, twisting, fading, getting flimsy after a few washes. A nicer basic just keeps looking good without you thinking about it.
Same thing happened to me with merino wool socks, decent underwear, heavyweight hoodies and nicer sweatpants.
None of them are “exciting” purchases, but they make everyday life noticeably better. That’s when I finally understood why people spend money on basics instead of constantly rebuying cheap ones.
What clothing item made you understand why people spend more money on basics?
A good heavyweight T-shirt.
