I’m looking for a free phone game that people are playing — not something that’s fun for two days and then forgotten. I don’t mind optional in-app purchases, but I want something that’s enjoyable without paying. Curious what people keep installed on their phone long-term. I intend to play it during my commute or during short breaks.
Marvel Snap, and I say this as someone who has downloaded and deleted approximately every "quick match" mobile game that's existed since 2020.
Matches are genuinely 3 minutes, sometimes less, which means it actually fits a commute instead of getting abandoned mid-match when your stop comes up. Card game, dead simple to learn in one match, but there's real depth once you start building decks — enough that it doesn't feel like a mindless time-waster, but not so much that it demands a strategy guide before you can enjoy it.
Ad situation is actually reasonable, not the aggressive "watch this or wait 4 hours" nonsense a lot of free games pull. In-app purchases exist for cosmetics and season passes but I've played free for over a year and never felt locked out of anything competitively relevant. This is the one that's survived every phone purge I've done, which says more than any review could.
I’ve had Clash Royale installed off and on for years. It’s a real-time strategy/card battler, but the matches are super short — perfect for a commute or 5-minute break. You unlock cards and build decks over time, so even if you play 10 minutes a day it feels like you’re making progress. I never paid a cent and I still enjoy multiplayer battles. There are seasons and events that keep it fresh.
