Originally released in 1956, Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are iconic Midcentury Modern pieces. Chances are, you've seen this lounger and ottoman in interior design magazines or on your Instagram feed.
The lounge chair is one of the most significant designs of the 20th century, but the design is timeless and still very relevant today.
I went into a Herman Miller store inside Westfield Mall in Century City, CA, to "experience" the chair in person, and it was the most comfortable chair I've ever sat on. Yes, even better than a La-Z-Boy.
It is located at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90067. You can call to schedule an appointment (323-510-1793) as the store gets quite busy on weekends.
This was the chair that was on display - how cool is this olive leather?
Choosing the finish of the chair was so hard!
The chair and ottoman are available in a range of wood finishes, upholsteries and sizes, giving you the option to customize them however you desire.
The most popular (iconic) finish is in black leather with a walnut shell, but it didn't seem like the right choice for my living room, which is mostly beige, warmer in tone. Black seemed a bit too stark for the space. I wanted something lighter and more neutral.
Shell refers to the wooden "base" that molds the chair and ottoman. I was tempted to go with a lighter-colored shell, but I decided against it because I felt like an Eames chair needed to have that walnut shell!
So many leather options!
Visiting a Herman Miller store is so helpful if you're unsure about the finish because you get to see the samples and play around with them.
You can take the samples home, too.
These are the leather options I considered, and ultimately, I ordered the chair in Rime stow leather and walnut shell.
Here are the dimensions of the chair and ottoman. Note that the chair comes in 2 sizes - standard and tall. The tall has a higher height and deeper seat, so it's ideal for taller people.
Shortly after placing an order, I was notified by Herman Miller that my order had been delayed. I had to patiently wait for 3 more weeks for my chair and ottoman to be delivered, but the wait was totally worth it.
With its unparalleled comfort and timeless design, the Eames Lounge Chair is simply perfection.
Some might argue that the chair and ottoman are overpriced. I, however, beg to differ. The quality craftsmanship is evident, and Herman Miller clearly doesn't cheap out on the materials, either.
And the ergonomic design of the chair and ottoman ensures you get your much-needed rest.
The chair looks like an art piece in my living room, and it is certainly a conversation piece whenever guests come over.
Either they recognize the iconic chair, or they comment on how cool the chair looks. And they are even more amazed at how comfortable it is once they sit on it.
Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The chair swivels, but the ottoman is stationary.
The base is made of die-cast aluminum, and it is the only option available.
Impeccable design!
This lounger has become my favorite chair. Now I need to find a side table that goes with it, so I can put my coffee in the morning :)
