Seagrass is a nursery for juvenile fish, a natural protection against coastal erosion, and a reservoir for carbon.
Seagrass was once common throughout California's coastal areas, but development, agricultural runoff, and vessel traffic have degraded and destroyed it by as much as 90%. Local restoration projects in Upper Newport Bay and other locations are starting to bring back seagrass.
We are always happy to see a sea lion!
Some baby seahorses are thriving, as well.
Excuse the blurry photos - the diving seabirds were splashers! These diving birds (called alcids) are incredible swimmers that use their wings as paddles to search for their food. These birds live at sea and only come ashore for breeding. They mate for life and build their nests on coastal cliffs, returning each year.
The Giant Japanese Spider Crab was the coolest creature we met. It is the largest crab species known today, measuring up to 13 feet from claw to claw!
Despite its rather menacing appearance, it has a gentle disposition.
