I’d like to introduce this really cool Korean traditional snack I’ve discovered while I was visiting Seoul. Lunar New Year is widely celebrated in many East Asian countries like China and Korea, so there are countless celebratory goods for gifts, ranging from a box of SPAM (!!!) to premium fruit baskets.

My trip was on the week of Lunar New Year, so fortunately, I got to explore all these fun gift ideas. Besides, I needed to get something for my pet sitter, a good gesture to show thanks on my part, and I was super excited to find this unique, traditional Korean snack.

It is called “Gosibowl”, a bite-sized treat made with rice powder. The “Gosibowl” reminds me of rice puffs due to its lightweight and fluffy texture. It contains freeze-dried fruit and grains for flavor, and I instantly fell in love with it after I sampled it at the department store in Seoul.

I purchased a box of Gosibowl, and the sales associate kindly giftwrapped it for me when I told her it was a gift. I ended up buying 2 boxes because I loved it so much.
According to the manufacturer, Gosibowl is a “fermented Korean snack made by nature”, although you cannot detect any sour taste like most fermented foods have. The makers of Gosibowl “keeps a traditional way of making snacks with ripen soft sticky rice and perfectly balanced freeze-dried fruit and grain”.
A box of Gosibowl contains 30 snack “balls”, in 10 different flavors. You get 3 Gosibowls per flavor. And they are individually packaged for easier snacking and fresher storage. It pairs amazingly well with tea, making it an ideal finger food for afternoon tea.

The best part about it is that it’s a very low-calorie snack. The entire box (57g) is only 295 kcal, which is significantly lower than other sweets like macarons. They are not as heavy as other sweeter treats, making them perfectly suitable treats for everyone, including the ones who need to watch their diet or weight.
I will definitely be repurchasing Gosibowl every time I visit Korea. My dog sitter LOVED it too. What a gem!
