Quality Cage Crafters’ Chinchilla Nest Box is a great hidey-house for chinchillas that is bound to satisfy even the pickiest chin owners. Since chinchillas are prey animals by nature, providing a safe, covered shelter is necessary. They like to sleep, hide and lounge around in cozy hidey-houses just like we do in our bedrooms. I’ve had chinchillas all my life, and the Chinchilla Nest Box from Quality Cage Crafters is by far the best.
The Nest Box is made of durable materials that are safe for chinchillas. The box is made of sturdy galvanized steel, powder coated in silver veins. It doesn’t warp or get stained. Because it is powder coated, it features a smooth surface that is easy to wipe clean if a chin were to defecate. It doesn’t rust, making it suitable and durable. You can place a fleece pad or cushion to make the box cozier. Changing out fleece pads is easier and more economical than replacing soiled and rusted hidey-houses.
Small animals like chinchillas are constant chewers. They will always need something to trim down their teeth. The Nest Box features a removable front door made of solid kiln-dried pine. The 4” opening is large enough for chunkier chinchillas to fit through. And because it’s made of wood, chins can always do a little “construction” to enlarge the hole. The size of the Nest Box is generous – 7” (w) x 9” (d) x 8” (h). Most chinchillas will fit comfortably.
The front door is also replaceable. The metal body should last a lifetime, so I’m glad that Quality Cage Crafters is offering door replacements.
Removable solid kiln-dried pine front door makes cleanup easy. Chins poop 24/7, so every once in a while, you’ll need to clean out the Nest Box as well. The wooden door slides out easily for a hand-held vacuum or a crevice vacuum tool to fit through.
Chinchillas are notoriously sensitive to heat and humidity. Heat stroke is a very real and common cause of death. Although you’ll still need to adjust the AC and keep the room cool, the Nest Box helps keep them cool. The box surrounded by metal is a great insulator and a cooling zone that helps the chins' body temperatures down.
The installation and attachment are easy. Everything is preassembled and made upon arrival, so there is no need for installation. You can either place it on a cage floor without mounting on a cage or mount on cage wires using the included wing nuts. The holes for mounting are pre-drilled on the back of the Nest Box.
My chins LOVE the Nest Box.
They groom, sleep, chew on toys, and lay around in there.
The Chinchilla Nest Box is the only hidey-house I will ever use, and I can confidently recommend it to any chinchilla owners.
