Ottchil Lacquer Highlights The Beauty of Korean Lacquer Craftsmanship

I have been a long-time fan of Huh Myoung Wook, a Korean artist who mixes ottchil with various painting mediums to bridge the traditional Korean method and modern aesthetics. "Ottchil" is a unique traditional lacquering method that is commonly found in Korean furniture, dinnerware, and decorative objects. The glossy lacquer finish creates a protective barrier, so the ottchil flatware and tableware have long been appreciated. I had hoped to get Huh's ottchil flatware and trays, but they weren't available in the US. I scoured the internet and inquired about several vendors for weeks. And as you can see, I finally got them!

First, I got 4 sets of chopsticks and spoons from a Korean store called Gallery Kabinett. It does ship to the United States, as long as I cover the shipping cost. I passed on the matching tray because that would increase the shipping cost too much.

My order came promptly, and it was wrapped in this thick canvas fabric.

Such a thoughtful touch that elevates the overall shopping experience.

I got the 4 sets in 4 different colors (green, beige, blue, and mustard). I am in love with the mustard color on the right.

The glossy black ottchil feels smooth and luxurious, and I find the spoons to be just the right size for Korean cuisine. Due to the nature of the material, this flatware needs to be hand-washed.

Remember how I wanted the tray from Huh Myoung Wook, as well? I searched some more and finally found a store that ships to the US for free. I purchased these multi-purpose trays through Ade New York, and I couldn't be happier.

Ade New York is a lifestyle online store that sources various home products such as furniture, dinnerware, decorative objects, and other accessories from renowned Korean artists. Without Ade New York, there was no way for me to purchase any of these goods as they are handmade and are made in small batches. You had to go to the artists' workshops in Korea, but Ade New York selects a handful of high-quality products and delivers them to the United States. Ade New York also has a few non-Korean brands, including USM, so be sure to check it out if you're shopping for some exotic home accessories.

The trays have vibrant colors, as all high-quality ottchil products do, and you'll be amazed at how lightweight they are.

I got two trays - one in yellow and the other one in green. They are richly saturated, and the colors are so lively!

The tray has a slightly high rim on the sides to catch any liquids or food debris. These trays are wonderful as food serving trays, but they'll also be great as decorative trays to introduce colors.

The back of the tray is finished in wood and has the artist's signature carved on it.

The subtle veins on the surface make the tray so elegant and artistic. Caring for the trays is easy. You can simply wipe it clean with a soft cloth, damp or dry, depending on the type of soil.

For the size reference, I placed a can of coke on the tray. It measures 15.16"(L) x 11.22"(W).

Considering it is an X-large size, it is not the largest, but I find it an adequate size to set a single-person table.

You can mix and match the chopsticks for a fun pop of color.

These beautiful ottchil lacquer items were worth the hassle of ordering and an additional shipping fee. I plan on visiting his workshop when I go to Korea.
