Meet the Eames Molded Plywood Folding Screen.

It is a classic piece of mid-century modern design created by the iconic design duo Charles and Ray Eames. Introduced in 1946, this screen exemplifies the innovative use of molded plywood that the Eameses were renowned for.

I first saw this screen at Jules Seltzer Associates. It was styled with the Eames lounge chair/ottoman, a stylish floor lamp, and a side table. It created a perfect backdrop for the lounging area, but I was more drawn to its light-blocking properties. Because

Jules Seltzer Associates had another screen for me to consider - the Screen 100. It is from Artek and was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936. I decided to go with the Eames screen because the Screen 100 only came in this natural finish, and I preferred the darker finish of the Eames screen. The Eames' Molded Plywood Folding Screen is available in 3 finishes - walnut (what I chose), ebony, and white ash.

This is the white ash finish.

The screen arrived in a slender cardboard box, folded neatly. Although the screen is designed to be portable, it is rather heavy, so be careful when moving it around. Due to the weight, the screen feels substantial.

The screen consists of six or eight interconnected panels made of molded plywood. Each panel is smoothly curved and connected by durable fabric hinges, allowing the screen to fold and flex in various configurations. The folding screen is highly versatile and can be used as a room divider, decorative element, or privacy screen.

The screen is made from high-quality molded plywood, a material that Charles and Ray Eames famously perfected for both its strength and aesthetic appeal.

The design showcases the natural beauty of the wood grain.

The fabric hinges between the panels provide flexibility while maintaining the screen's structural integrity.

It folds flat for compact storage.

Charles and Ray Eames' Molded Plywood Folding Screen reflects the couple's philosophy of creating design solutions that are both practical and beautiful, using innovative materials and techniques. It's a Mid-Century Modern icon for good reasons.
