Trader Joe's Murasaki Sweet Potatoes

I’ve been looking for Asian sweet potatoes for quite some time now. I tried baked sweet potato in Korea, and it was nothing like the ones that I had in America. I visited Korea in December, and there were lots of street food trucks that sell baked sweet potatoes and chestnuts. They were so good! Determined to enjoy those sweet potatoes, I looked for the specific sweet potato variety. I find the Asian sweet potatoes sweeter and drier than what we have in the States, which turn out amazing when baked. I found some at Asian grocery stores, but I recently found something really similar at Trader Joe’s, and I had to share it with ya’ll.

Murasaki is one of the Japanese sweet potato varieties, and it tastes similar to what I’ve tasted in Korea. You can a 3lbs bag of Murasaki sweet potatoes by the potato/onion aisle, which is usually right by the entrance.

These potatoes have purple skin that can easily be peeled when steamed or baked (just like all sweet potatoes), and I don’t even need to garnish them with sour cream and brown sugar because they’re already really sweet. They get sweeter when I baked them, by the way.

The Murasaki sweet potatoes are white inside, and when baked, they turn slightly yellow. In terms of color, they aren’t as appetizing as American sweet potatoes, but I personally prefer them so much more.

According to the packaging, Murasaki sweet potatoes have a “chestnut-y flavor and slightly fluffy texture that’s at home in savory or sweet preparations”. Yup, they got the taste note right. The texture is incredibly fluffy when baked, and I find pair them with milk. So good!

The nearest Asian grocery store is 20 miles away, and I have a Trader Joe’s in my apartment building. So really no reason for me to drive all the way to the Asian market now.
