La Tourangelle Cooking Oils

La Tourangelle is a family-owned producer of artisan food and oils. I’ve tried a fair number of artisan oils over the years, and La Tourangelle is always my preferred oil brand.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an oil connoisseur or professional chef, so I don’t insist on buying a certain brand. But if I see La Tourangelle, I will buy it. Their oils are great – never rancid, clean tasting and bring out the flavors in the food I cook – without being overly expensive.

La Tourangelle crafts its products locally in California and France, following its traditional practices. I particularly love La Tourangelle’s packaging, not because I fall for fancy designs, but because oils need to be stored in dark containers to preserve their flavors and aroma. There are so many oils that are improperly packaged – I cringe every time I see olive oil that comes in a clear, plastic bottle. What? All La Tourangelle’s oils are packaged in completely opaque, tin bottles to preserve freshness.

I occasionally buy over-the-top expensive oils from time to time, usually during the holidays or when I feel like trying new things; however, I don’t believe they’re significantly better. In my humble opinion, specialty oils like truffle oils are worth splurging for. The aroma is just far too important to ignore when you’re shopping for specialty oils. For regular everyday oils, however, La Tourangelle is very ideal. A 500ml bottle usually retails for $8-12, depending on the type of oil.

Also, La Tourangelle offers countless oil varieties. You can get widely-used oils like EVOO, Canola Oil or Grapeseed oil to more eclectic oils like pistachio oil, pumpkin seed oil, or avococo oil (avocado and coconut). Honestly, I’ve never heard of pistachio oil until I saw it displayed in the grocery store aisle!

My go-to everyday cooking oils are grapeseed oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). I like to use grapeseed oil for dishes that require high heat settings. Grapeseed oil can safely be heated up to 450 degrees, which makes it an ideal choice for such dishes.

And I use La Tourangelle’s EVOO for at-home salad dressings or daily cooking like stir-frying.

La Tourangelle’s Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil is cold pressed from Andalucía, Spain. These olives are harvested early to preserve the high antioxidant properties, and this oil yields a slightly peppery flavor that I love. You will like this olive oil.

I’ve been meaning to try out their organic salad dressings, but I haven’t gotten a chance to do so. Once I finish bottles of unopened salad dressings, I’m determined to give them a try.
