I picked up a box of Macarons at Trader Joe’s just because I was craving something sweet. I was fully prepared to be disappointed. Macarons - the premium dessert that is difficult to make – are in the frozen food aisle. I came home and ate one. Man, I’ll be damned, it’s good! It’s surprisingly so good and tasty. They got the coque right, flavors are present, and have the right amount of sweetness. And they are much more affordable than other supermarket macarons that are frankly not even that good.
I bought the assorted kind because I wanted to try different flavors.
They are mostly good, and you can taste/differentiate the flavors. But don’t worry, the flavors aren’t overly strong and overwhelm you.
I do hope that Trader Joe’s offers boxes for individual flavors, though. I did not like some flavors (coconut, for example) and would much rather replace that flavor with something else.
Each macaron is smaller than I’m used to, but good news is that each has less calories (40 calories per macaron), if that helps with your guilt.
Yes, if you have a local bakery that nails fresh macarons, go for them. These macarons probably can’t beat them. But, if you’re looking for some affordable dessert that you can keep in stock, so you can grab one or two every time you’re passing by the fridge, go and get this.
