Feeding pet chinchillas a nutritious and high-quality diet is imperative as it prevents various health problems and digestive issues which are detrimental to the chinchillas’ health. Unlimited access to fresh timothy hay is always the most important feeding rule to follow. Because some chinchillas urinate on hay when they eat (just like rabbits), make sure to dump what’s remaining and refill it with fresh hay every day.

Chinchillas get supplemental nutrients from quality chinchilla food. I’ve had chinchillas for 10 years, and during that time, I’ve tried various brands. I’ve had the most success with Mazuri, and I highly, highly recommend it. There are a few reputable brands that are trusted by many chinchilla breeders, rescuers, and owners. Although I’ve been very successful with Mazuri, some chinchillas might prefer Oxbow, another reputable brand. So, try it with your chinchillas and see how they like the food. But please don’t feed your chinchillas the “Fiesta Mix” garbage that contains sunflower seeds and other “snacks”. They are terrible for your chinchillas’ health, and you’re wasting money.

I was so glad to find Mazuri at my local Petco because it has been only available online for a long time. Petco generously price matches, so if you’re out of food and need to get the food ASAP, check your local Petco store. I believe they only offer 2.5 lbs bags, though.
The Chinchilla Food comes in 2 sizes – 2.5lbs and 25lbs. The 25lbs bag is considerably cheaper, so if your chinchilla’s happy with the food, I recommend getting the larger bag. Make sure to store the remaining food in an airtight container to keep it fresh.

Here is a guaranteed analysis chart provided by Mazuri:

My chinchillas are 14 years old and are still healthy and inquisitive. I will continue to give them Mazuri.
