OXO Good Grips GreenSaver Produce Keeper

It’s astonishing how much produce goes wasted in the United States alone.

I’ve been frustrated with the vegetables I bought 2-3 days ago were quickly losing their freshness and ultimately end up in the garbage disposal.

What a waste.

I found OXO’s GreenSaver Produce Keeper but wasn’t sure how effective it was going to be.

I didn’t believe that a simple container with a carbon filter could prolong the life of vegetables and fruits. But my friends were raving about it, so I decided to give it a go.

And everything inside the Produce Keeper lasts at least a week!

What kind of magic is this?

My vegetables and fruits stay fresh longer and retain their firmness for much longer periods of time.

It’s not a gimmick or an overrated marketing scheme.

OXO’s Produce Keeper works by controlling the ethylene gas that fruits and vegetables emit. Ethylene gas is the culprit for wilted produce since it speeds up the ripening process. Once ripen, it’s a matter of time before they go bad. In order to keep production longer, OXO’s carbon filter absorbs ethylene gas, and as a result, it can slow down the ripening process.

The Produce Keeper consists of 4 parts: a plastic container, a basket, a carbon filter, and a lid (with a vent).

Together, they ensure proper airflow and optimum humidity for different types of produce, so they last longer.

Inside the plastic container, there is a basket that fits snugly. It elevates vegetables and fruits so that they get proper ventilation. This way, no fruit touches the side of the container, and we know without ventilation, how quickly they get mushy.

The basket can be used as a colander for rinsing, and I find it so useful for berries.

I use the smaller Produce Keeper as a berry box exclusively. Rinsing and storing berries have gotten so much more convenient with the Produce Keeper, and it is one less colander for me to wash.

You get a carbon filter that goes under the vent.

The filter absorbs ethylene gas so that everything stays fresher longer.

You’ll need to replace the filter every 90 days, so that’s an additional expense you’ll have to think about. For me, it’s worth it.

And the lid features an adjustable vent to control humidity because vegetables and fruits have different optimal humidity levels.

Under the vent, OXO provides a helpful humidity chart for common produce. For example, if you’re storing strawberries, keep the vent open.

The plastic container is semi-transparent, and it can be both good and bad. Unlike completely transparent containers, the Produce Keepers look neater when arranged in the fridge.

The downside is that sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s inside.

I can kind of see what’s inside, and I usually know what I put in there in the first place, so that doesn’t bother me too much.

It is scientifically engineered to keep my produce to stay fresh longer, so the Produce Keeper’s definitely worth the price.
