I have a love-and-hate relationship with dust baths. Although I practically don’t need to do anything to bathe my chinchilla, it creates such a dusty mess! Still, considering how much of a hassle it is to bathe my dog who HATES a bath, I’d so rather vacuum the floors. At least my chinchilla loves a bath, goes into the bathhouse voluntarily, and cleans himself.

I purchased a can of Small Animal Bathing Sand from Tiny Friends Farm, and so far, we are loving it. My chinchilla loves dust baths (like any other chinchilla would do), and I have to convince him to come out of the bathhouse.

It is labeled for all small animals that take dust baths, including chinchillas, rats, hamsters, gerbils, and degus. I believe rabbits and guinea pigs don’t require dust baths.

According to Tiny Friends Farm, its sand is tested for grain size and density to make sure that it reaches deep inside dense fur. Chinchillas have dense, super fine hair, so having sand particles small enough is important.

Each can contains 2.2 pounds of bathing sand, which is plentiful for my chinchilla. I don’t need to pour out the entire can.

I usually use about a third to fill up the bath house from Kaytee, and it lasts me weeks. I scoop out his poop droppings and balls of hair now and then, so the bathing sand doesn’t stay soiled, and he really enjoys his bath time. My chinchilla gets a bath 2-3 times a week, depending on his fur condition. I do give dust baths more frequently in summer (4-5 times a week).

Tiny Friends Farm Small Animal Bathing Sand is also 100% dust-free (I know, ironic!), to minimize respiratory issues for both humans and small animals. My chinchilla was coughing all the time when I was using a different brand’s bathing sand, and he hasn’t been coughing with this bathing sand. I’ve tried many bathing sand varieties in the market, and he seemed to have issues with one brand only. I’m pleased to note that Tiny Friends Farm’s bathing sand hasn’t been causing any respiratory problems.
Good buy!
